An elder sister came to visit her younger sister in the country. The elder was married to a tradesman in town, the younger to a peasant in the village. As the sisters sat over their tea talking, the elder began to boast of the advantages of town life saying how comfortably they lived there, how well they dressed, what fine clothes her children wore, what good things they ate and drank, and how she went to the theatre, promenades, and entertainments. The younger sister was piqued, and in turn disparaged the life of a tradesman and stood up for that of a peasant.

I love Tolstoy's novels for adults, but discovered a few years ago that he also wrote stories for children. This is a particular favorite of mine that I have seen in several editions. This is, however, the most attractive of them all. In a world in which greed seems to be regarded as acceptable, this little story charmingly and cleverly illuminates why it is indeed one of the Seven Deadly Sins.Product details

How Much Land Does a Man Need? (Audible Audio Edition) Leo Tolstoy Ted Kettler CT Davis Audio Books Reviews
Boris Dralyuk's translation of this tale by Tolstoy is seamless in its artful use of the English language--and both the paper book and the e-book are lovely in their design. The story itself, and its allegorical structure, is a powerful social commentary on human greed and its price. A wonderful book from Calypso Editions! Many thanks!
Nice and still actual story of man.
A great read that sums up our endless thirst (greed) if a well written story.
Highly recommended to anyone evaluating the value of their lives.

Wonderful short stories that should be read by everyone. I love them all, but my favorite is "What Men Live By". I couldn't put the book down, read it all in one day! Highly Recommend!!
This book was simple and short, yet powerfully rich in content. I wasn’t expecting the finale. It touched me in a way that has made me rethink my reasons for seeking ambition.
Quite interesting generally, but there are some stories I simply don't understand.
I found several of the stories to be well written and beautiful, particularly those with a clear Christian/moral basis. I particularly enjoyed the title story and "What Men Live By". These two stories showed a real grasp of human nature and presented memorable insights.
On the other hand, the military stories are hard to read and the language is basically 19th century gargon to me. I'd love to see a modern version of "The Two Hussars" for example, where a more current setting and scenario may help to clarify what the story is about. I stopped reading "the Woodfelling" about half-way through because it just wasn't going anywhere in my opinion.
I'll buy it again to be honest, because there are a few gems in it...and who knows, maybe I'll re-read the other stories in a few years and be better able to grasp their meaning.
